I have to believe the cows in Whatcom County are hurting. Around here they are treading water right now. Except for the one in my freezer.

Sig, ? for you. I have 3 New food grade blue plastic barrels and I would like to save wheat, oats and corn in them. I wish to have a food source for small animals and for a 210 lb dud, oops meant dude if things get really bad. What do you think of grains from the fields. Are they "clean" enough for storage and with additional cleaning be ok for emergency food source for a human? I used to eat grains from bags when I fed cows and horses and didn't seem to hurt me too much as I'm 75 take no meds.

Might get a couple myself. Most of my beans and assorted grains and legumes are stored in the original 5-lb and 10-lb packaging, layered inside large plastic totes.

buy a fishing rod and the correct lures there is some fable about this. We have a whole river (the Missouri River) just down the way, just full of non-native Silver Carp. No boat, so I'll have to make a deal with the local fishermen. There is not currently a big market as they are rather bony (although I hear they taste OK). But in a pinch, I think some industrious fishermen could make out like bandits. Since the Silvers are non-native, and considered an invasive pest, they might even get a government grant. Might have to learn to dry fish though if the grid goes.
Grind them up for fertilizer

I would recommend storing that type of commodity in a burlap bag IF you planned on storing them in a non temperature controlled area. Freezing, thawing creates moisture. The plastic barrel, if sealed won't let the moisture migrate out. The result of confinement would be moldy unedible grains. As far as from a field, combine etc. That would be the best source. Each time a grain is handled, there is seed checking. That is why elevators have dust collectors. The integrity of any grain is superior when it comes out of the combine auger. Hope that helped?

Will be an interesting year. Drought in about 1/3 of corn belt. Frost/freeze in Brazil. Planted acres not as high as projected.

Missouriboy, Picked them up in Medford, OR. I think at Jackson Perkins. 50 gal blue food grade. J.P. may be out of business. Sig, Thanks for the info. I thought that if I could keep air and moisture out and use oxygen eaters all would be ok. Didn't think of temp swings. Burlap sacks hard to find around here but it makes more sense but how long storage can I expect?
