Today I see that the SN has reduced from 382 to 180 in a day, and again the latest solar images show little change in spot group size and shape. SF has reduced a bit, but not a huge amount. It makes sense that the important data are displayed as smoothed curves, daily figures seem to be a bit variable as I've noted before. Blustnmtn suggests watching Michelle Makori.

August 26th: Record Cold outbreaks are occurring in both northern and southern hemispheres. This is not a normal August map.

I like Electroverse's articles, in the comments there is a link to here:
which is another cold cyclic zonal oscillation in the equatorial Atlantic Ocean. A bit like the ENSO phenomenon in the Pacific

Thanks for that link. I wonder if Cap has changed his access policy again. Some months back he had cut off detail access to those that did not pay the minimum $10 access fee. He seems to have developed a great source network over the years.

Northern hemisphere very quiet on the sun. One might think they are related.

Northern hemisphere very quiet on the sun. only thing that suggests to me is half the sun is broken ..or going to sleep ? will it wake ? we shall see ...

I think there is a case to be made that it is the southern half of the sun that is acting strange.
My guess is that for some reason an unusually large percentage of magnetic ropes in the southern hemisphere have been "pushed " to the outer surface of the sun for an extended period causing a big increase in the sunspot number. I would expect that the internal circulation will ultimately even things out and we'll soon see a significant drop in the southern hemisphere sunspot numbers.
The northern hemisphere seems fairly normal and if that remains true, the overall monthly sunspot numbers should decline over the next several weeks. But the recent high monthly total sunspot numbers will still be in the 13-week smoothed sunspot calculation for a while resulting in an upward push in the 13-week "maximum" for a while longer.

missouriboy posted a graph comparing various solar cycles overlaid, including the current one. If that graph repeats the respective older cycle values from now on then we may well see a very rapid tailing off of the overall solar activity in the next months/year. Given that a grand solar maximum is predicted in the 2035-2050 time frame then a rapid fall in activity followed by a very low energy cycle 26 may be what happens. Fun this solar guessing eh?

The sun is quite active at the moment. Another X class flare today.

There has been a global outbreak of tropical storms - some biggies - in the last week. Related to the uptick in solar activity?

That is a great graphic thank you. While 25 is bigger than 24 it may end quicker...
