Frozen precipitation expected in the Houston metro area tonight. Friday morning mayhem on the freeways guaranteed. It takes very little when folks are not accustomed to it. Be safe. Thank you. I will.

Frozen precipitation expected in the Houston metro area tonight. Friday morning mayhem on the freeways guaranteed. The media blows these "potential" frozen precipitation events way out of line down here. I am not saying that it won't happen just that I've seen something like 9 out of 10 of these potential storms not live up to the media hype. You have to keep in mind that fear sells and headlines like "treacherous travel conditions" get views and clicks. Truth is it's not going to get cold enough long enough to cause many problems except on the highest of the over passes on northern and western areas of Houston. I will make one prediction that is guaranteed to be more accurate than any of the weather forecasts. There will be several so called news crews reporting from the highest elevated portions of the freeways in Houston on the 10pm news tonight trying to capture a few ice pellets falling from the sky in a shameless effort to get views and clicks...

Around here it's always the first winter event of the year that they hype up. Maybe they are trying to get views but I feel like they are just excited about the first snow of the year. After the first significant snowfall the forecasts get more accurate.

I'm just happy to be north of the bleeding (ice) edge of weather.

I agree with Mr. Glenn. By the time the temps in Houston get far enough below freezing to cause problems, the rain will have moved east. On the other hand, my brothers in Buffalo are in for a foot or more, I'll bet. One of them flew to the Yucatan yesterday. In a text last night after he had a couple of tequilas, and with the warm sand between his toes, he hinted he was hiring a realtor in QR. He may never go back to Buffalo.

I will have to admit, waking up to 67F isn't bad. Wearing short sleeved shirts isn't bad.
Older ladies (I must look old, gosh, I am) keep expressing their concern that I don't have a jacket on. I just smile and say I have one at home.
So far, no snow nor ice.
At home this morning, -32F.

He may have to get used to a whole new mafia. I've spent some time in QR and other parts of Mexico and the Carib. Beautiful most of the time. But Mexico can look forward to a lot of strife.

Pray for no more of this ....

Houston update. Western suburbs had some sleet and icy bridges last night. Rest of metro area fine. 30 degrees here in San Leon with a 20mph North wind. Dog walk was brutal this morning. High today 42 predicted. Normal high is in the low 60's. Brrrr

It's 27 here at my home in Friendswood, TX. The media achieved their goal. Schools are cancelled and daycares closed. So no work for me today. Zero frozen precipitation in most of the Houston metro. I don't know what happened between now and when I was a kid but 27 degrees meant a cold bike ride to school. Now in our new cancel culture we simply cancel school at the smallest chance of freezing precipitation.
As for winter this year? It's been a yoyo. November was average to slightly above. December was a blow torch and the warmest December on record. January was normal to slightly below and February is starting out below normal.
One word? Unpredictable.

Sigurdur, Let us know when the mercury drops to about 30 degrees and your newly aclimatized body to the southern comfort finds it "unbearable". My dad was from Chicago and he said it took a couple of years but it happens to all you snowbirds!

I am confident in another 10 years 30F will feel cool. Really, I am surprised I haven't acclimated. It isn't as if I just got here. I see people running around with jackets, gloves, stocking caps. I know they feel 🥶, I am just not feeling it yet.

We got almost 4" of rain here on the Mississippi Coast, almost an inch after the front went through and temps dropped into the 40s. It's in the mid 30s F this morning, with a pretty sharp north breeze. The Frenchie wasn't happy I made him go out and walk.

How many winters in the last 10 have you got something similar?
