Tesla Asks Owners to Limit Charging During Texas Heatwave. That Isn’t a Good Sign.

“A heatwave is expected to impact the grid in Texas over the next few days,” reads a photo of a message pushed to Tesla vehicles in Texas last week. “The grid operator recommends avoiding charging during peak hours between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., if possible, to help statewide efforts manage demand.”

Writes Rob Stumpf at The Drive:

“For EV owners in Texas, conserving electricity doesn’t just mean charging during off-peak hours. It also means adjusting driving habits — perhaps driving less overall or not turning the air conditioning down quite as far. Given that Texas also has the third-highest number of electric cars registered in the entire United States, it’s easy to see how reducing the number of EVs charging at one time could reduce the stress on an already taxed grid.”

"Given that Texas has the third-highest number of electric cars..." Ah yes, can't miss any opportunity to make it sound like there's lots of electric cars out there. Of course, Texas has the SECOND highest population of any state in the US by a considerable margin, so the number of electric cars *per capita* could easily be quite low, but there's no point trying to do any meaningful analysis when you could run a scare story.
