I still think that we should learn to properly maintain, repair, and generally care for decent quality new and then used gasoline cars of practical design, and the total cost to individuals and society will be much lower.

What about a completely novel idea let the market decide.
I have a PHEV and the electric component is BS. Depreciation on any car is $1/Km in NZ and the fuel at 1c/Km or 8c/Km is just lost in the errors.
Hybrid is good and could be a lot better with development over time.

I'm entirely in favor of "let the market decide". But that's not what we are getting. I'm interested in hybrids myself somewhat. There needs to be some serious benefit to offset the added cost, complexity, and weight, and environmental impact. I'm not convinced it is there yet.
