We in NZ sit on the same risk. We have a 300K city which has a risk of a 9 magnitude earthquake right now. In fact overdue by some decades. there are reports that 20 to 40K will die and the city will not be usable for a decade, regardless we agonize over an average sea level rise of 1.41mm/yr demanding immediate action. It is also the capital city and seat of parliament. recently slow earthquakes have been show to be moving well. Problem is the city sits in a region between said slow slip earthquakes that is stuck. the bright side, would the US survive the complete devastation of Washington DC. Outside of the tragedies of people dying probably much better, and so will NZ. The Smithsonian would be a real loss, ditto the original copies of the founding documents (though those might survive), and I'd regret the loss of some of the monuments.
Otherwise? Definite net benefit to the country. Sad, but true.

MB my page in one, careful what you wish for. There are times when the world needs to be turned upside down and shaken ... and the surviving pieces can be judged on their humanity and usefulness. Those who live in darkness cannot stand the light ... as it has become toxic to them from lack of interaction. Smash their dark crevices and they will scatter and starve (at least initially) ... as they produce no edible fruit. They merely 'take' from others. It is a harsh criticism, but true I think. Aristotle is credited with the statement "We Greeks live like frogs around a pond". The pond had no life without the frogs, and the frogs had no life without the pond (I stole this). Violently shake the pond and all manner of aggregations will be broken up ... at least for a while. Our Republic is not yet a quarter of a century old. The "unproductive frogs" are consuming the fabric of the experiment. A good shaking may be in order.
There are other sayings that we(collective) ignore at our own peril.
15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? 17 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them.
There is also this. "Judge not least you be judged". So a little inward reflection is required.

They're already judging me. Actually they've already judged me and decided I'm racist, I want to kill grandma, and I'm a 'denier'.
So what do I have to lose by judging?

You've heard about the emergent ocean ridge eruptions on the western edge? They say it's only 'interesting' but one has to wonder if there's a correlation with past mega-quakes...

I would guess that surveys, including drilling and ground-penetrating tech has been used over the years. No clue as to whether anyone addressed the issue you raise. When the fat lady steps up to the mic ...

The 4.8 New York earthquake is claimed to be the strongest since 1894. I note that 1894 was the 4th year of Solar Cycle 13 ... 2024 is just into the 5th year of Solar Cycle 25. We have already noted how similar SC25 has been to SC13.

The “”New York” quake was actually in New Jersey. I’m at my cabin in the Catskills and didn’t feel it. My brother was at work on Long Island and said the whole building shook pretty good for about 20 seconds.

Did this one hit the stratosphere? Shall we expect a notch down in temperatures? People tell me that this huge geothermal plug that underlies Indonesia and others couldn't possibly contribute significant heat to that whole area of ocean. I'm not sure I believe it.
