First snow of the year here. About 2 inches, with the daytime highs dropping into the 30s F. And precipitation about an inch above normal for December. Putting a dent in our summer-fall deficit,

Thing is, sibera/Scandinavia are having record cold 🤷♂️ I'm of the opinion what we see atm more than ever is weather. Climate is off the menu until strat water vapour settles down.

Think is, for western Europe at least, there'll have to be a shift in prevalent patterns to move this to us.
Atm there is no solid indication this will happen.

I think it is most likely natural weather fluctuations and not a broader long term shift in climate or volcanic eruption. It's been very mild for most of the U.S. and very cold over most of Eastern Europe and China this year. Eric Snodgrass over at ag-wx.com attributes much of this years weather in the U.S. to persistent low pressure over Alaska and higher pressure in the west that has led to converging air flow over much of the U.S. this fall and winter. Converging air flow is milder and blocks colder air from moving south. He suspects that this upper level air pattern will change as we get into mid to late January and allow for some much colder air to push south later this winter. We will see... The last 30 days has been a blow torch over the US.

I watch a daily in depth update from Eric Sodgrass on YouTube. Since I work outdoors on the water it really helps me with longer term planning. But his website ag-wx.com is amazing with the most comprehensive collection of weather links imaginable. Great tool for those of you weather "nerds".

Right now in Australia, we should be in the grip of drought: Positive (though weakening) IOD in conjunction with an El Nino. Instead, there has been flooding and widespread good rainfall in many parts that should be dry. On this representation, where it says "reduced chance of rain", we've had good to flooding rains. Hunga-Tonga?

Clearly the issue isn't that the earth is so warm that snow is not falling....its just its all falling where there are few people!

My Daughter who has been in the Sunpeaks region of Canada has not experienced a cold or snowy start to the ski season.
But Barney is coming out to play.
