Well, I've broken out the sheepskin, a coat I'll never sell 😉 -5°c last night, things progressing nicely for a coldie like myself! That low is affecting us later then forecast prior. Looking like 15th and southerly track. About 5C here right now (5PM). What happened to your warm NAD heating? Well that's the thing, when we get really cold it's always air from the east or north. Ie, normal weather is reversed. This cold air gets to us before ever interacting with the Atlantic, its effect is negated. Any shift in pattern direction to southerly or westerly, temps will rise.

My ticker seems to have had a hiccup in the wiring. Have appointment @ Mayo Rochester on Tuesday. Looks like it may be Thursday before I get home. Hoping to leave on Saturday for Alabama. Snowfall forecast totals vary from 14-28" in my area. It was -27F at my place a few nights ago. Time to get south!!

This cold air gets to us before ever interacting with the Atlantic, its effect is negated. Any shift in pattern direction to southerly or westerly, temps will rise. We almost never get winds from the east. When the southward push starts straight north or to the west is when we get cold visitations. Source area temps and pressure gradients determine how cold. The northward "umph" in the Gulf circulation moderates the southward penetration ... and it's moisture affects semi-liquid fallout. When they both get together for a party over Middle Earth is when we get buried. And then they trash Texas.

Been watching the temps in Lorient FRA (coastal Brittany). They've been colder than us. So much for the Atlantic gyre.

Just occurred to me Sig. You'll be really easy to spot down there in Dothan. If you get a spell of 20F temperatures, you'll be the one wearing the shorts. Enjoy.

In my part of the world October was 1.8 degrees below normal. November was more like January and up to this point December has been more like June.
It's been somewhat of a roller coaster ride in lovely Southeast Texas.

Looks like a tough month or longer for Europe. This will exacerbate fuel shortages and costs.

Ice day today, hadn't gone above freezing, some areas had snow but not widespread. Outlook....milder, those not in certainty range, its not the initial low I mentioned...but the next one which breaks through it appears.

This shows a forecast and history of average NH wind direction. Blue is westerly, orange is easterly. It's useful for seeing how the models predict SSW as yellow higher in graph (hpa) reaches altitudes of the strat. I havnt seen such a forecast for surface winds without an ssw before. Huge blocking is being forecast somewhere NH. This will change with each model run, but its something to keep an eye on! That recent wind reversal gave UK coldest December weather for 12 years!
