Really very cold UK now, anywhere between -8°c to -14°c at the extremes across Central parts this a.m.
Cold night ahead too.
A place called Benson has a RAF Airfield, by 5pm this evening got colder quicker then at anytime during 2010! Benson is in a topographical hollow where cold air sinks to, so its often watched.
Warmer pulse of air due this weekend, then models firming on more cold after....we'll see!

Daytime highs here are forecast at 12F ca. -11C for 3 days with more in the 20sF on both sides Lows could hit -20C. Welcome to the cousin (child) of 2010-11. Same place on the solar cycle without SC24 opening Nino. Just a smudge from 25. ENSO anomaly of -1C straight across the tropical Pacific.
Where's the beef Al?

GFS and European models are bringing some record breaking cold all the way into the southern US on Christmas Eve. Looks like a deep low may bring brutal cold and snow to the northeast on Christmas. Going to be a very cold and active holiday season...

This chart puts the current English experience into perspective. Don't immediately have one of these for 2009-10 or 2010-11.

Hope you are safely tucked away in southern Bama. You should send that article to Michael Mann and John Kerry with a request for comment.

Looks like November snow cover in the Northern Hemisphere, Eurasia and North America was above the 1966-2022 average for all three areas. The third largest extent on record for North America and the 4th for the NH as a whole. The part that I find interesting is the decadal trend for all three areas is plus 1.44%. Now we know the severity of our winters in the US is linked to snow cover in Eurasia. Especially in November. I guess this could be explained away by the AGW crowd as a warming planet has more moisture to work with but at some point that increasing snow cover will probably lead to colder winters. www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/monitoring/monthly-report/global-snow/202211
