Not really EV, but auto...so...
Insurance v energy investment in existing vehicles.
My neice has had her car written off. I had a look at it, parts damaged are bumper, washer bottle, structural bar, lights.
Insurance says £3500 to repair.
I can't help but feel there's a waste occurring in a world where we're being made to pay for new things, with attached energy expenses, while existing things are being disposed unnecessarily.
Once something is made and placed in a location where it is to be used it should be preserved where practical. This is the best environmental principle.
Waste is not environmental.

It is cheaper for the insurance company to "total it" and send it to the salvage yard. Of course the salvage yard will recycle anything they can salvage.

Currently, most estimates put the average price of a new EV somewhere around $64,000, which is slightly lower than the average price in the spring and summer of last year (2022).Jan 29, 2023
What I never really hear about is that the initial cost is too high. Much fossil fuels are burned in producing the extra $30K (more than 30k worth if we could economize and drive used cars longer). I can estimate it in my own business, it is thousands of gallons of diesel fuel.

Model? Market value? 6 year old kia hatchback prob worth about £3500 Ratty. I just don't believe repairs should be that much tho? Insurance repairs are a sellers market from what I can see. Repairers don't GAF if Insurance doesn't take their offer, the next car will be along soon. Insurers don't deal with an open market as there'll be a few big repair outfits they deal with, they won't deal with lots of small/competing outfits as too complicated? I'd swear repairers charge storage fee too? My old truck went in and they waited for a radiator for over 4 weeks, they were off the shelf at local parts shop! Long and short....the system is only interested in inflating prices and making big profit on the cars they do get, scrap the rest.

My first brand new car cost about $2000. $100k pickup trucks are fairly common now. I bought one in 2016 for $53k and I knew that was dumb. I still have that one, but I actually use the one that I bought last year for $2k.
