‘Reckless and unprofessional’: Labor politicians slam Chinese laser attack on RAAF aircraft The Labor Party (~ Democrats) has condemned China’s targeting of an RAAF aircraft with a military grade laser as “reckless and unprofessional”.

Amid a series of Coalition attacks on its national security policy, the Labor Party has slammed China as “reckless and unprofessional” after a Chinese naval vessel targeted an RAAF aircraft with a military grade laser.
In a statement released on Sunday, Labor’s Shadow Minister for Foreign affairs, Senator Penny Wong, and Defence Shadow Minister Brendan O’Connor, said: “these are not the actions of a responsible power”.
“China must understand that such actions will only engender further mistrust”.
“We expect the Morrison Government to convey Australia’s strong condemnation to authorities in Beijing," the statement said.

The incident took place as a RAAF P-8A Poseidon monitored a Chinese destroyer and amphibious transport vehicle sailed through the Arafura Sea.
Laser attacks are considered extremely dangerous and provocative and can injure pilots impact an aircraft’s systems.
Labor’s response follows similar remarks on Sunday from Defence Minister Peter Dutton and Prime Minister Scott Morrison.
Speaking on Sky News on Sunday, Mr Dutton said the attack was “very aggressive” and that Australia would work closely with its allies to respond to Chinese aggression.
“I think the most important thing is to shine a light on these sorts of behaviours.
"I think the Chinese government is hoping that nobody talks about these aggressive bullying acts," Mr Dutton said.
