Tropical Tidbits has 'live' data from hurricane hunters, you can see when they're passing the eye by the recorded wind speeds!

Extreme western North Carolina. Just arrived in a little town called Murphy, near the picturesque Ocoee River Looks like a nice little place in some beautiful country. Exteme SW N Carolina is one area that I have yet to get to. Stay safe. It's quite nice here, Mr. Moboy. Although I remain perplexed as to what drives the economy. And, I have tuned my hearing to detect banjos in the hills. Just in case.

Although I remain perplexed as to what drives the economy. And, I have tuned my hearing to detect banjos in the hills. Just in case. Economies are strange animals Mr Phy and I assume that it is so because the human animal is so incredably adaptive. Perhaps you can find hints during your stay. Thank God I am not an economist or I would be seeing the ghosts of a million contrived conjectures all packed up in a model(s) that no one in their right mind should take at face value. But the faithful will bow down and say it must be so. As for banjos, these are the American replacement for the Celtic war horn (carnyx). Pay attention to tempo, and if they seem to be advancing on your position, grab your Southern Cross and wave it vigorously. I fear for your porch Mr Phy.

I am in touch with many folks who stayed in NOLA. One of them, a veteran of several storms said, "It's 10x worse than what you are seeing on TV." The biggest problem is going to be electricity. Reports are that a huge transmission tower carrying 8 high voltage lines to New Orleans has collapsed into the Mississippi River near the Huey P. Long bridge. If that is true my sources say power could be out for two weeks or more. And if that is the case, I hope the National Guard is mobilizing to secure the city. The veneer of civilization is pretty thin in the best of times, and it rips to shreds three or four days into a power outage in a major city.
