I remember the last time this happened was around 2002 or so. I fairly thought that the US market would be mostly immune to China's debt problems, but that wasn't entirely true. We had a stock market downturn, it took the air out of the sails of US stocks. Of course it came back in due time. But I may sell stocks in the morning. Code, are you there? I may as well. Will have to hunt a bit to achieve my 6%+ dividend returns. Also have a nice appreciation value. Guess it may be time to switch to protect mode. The US economy has huge craters as well.

If you have any good ideas feel free to share Williams Companies (WMB) will be an attractive dividend and appreciation play after a nice September sell-off. But the next ex-date is 9/8.

A lot of pessimism here. If you have real concerns about the long term future for investments you can currently buy zero coupon US Treasury bonds for $39 that will pay you back $100 in 20 years if the government has the money or can borrow it.

I am an optimist. Saying the above, the interest burden will soon overwhelm. Inflation is very sticky. In absolute terms, this decreases the value of the National Debt. The biggest problem is there is no slowdown in the rate of increase in the National Debt. I am also a realist.

After all the hype, China's GDP per capita is about the same as Mexico's. And a little over 1/5 of Mississippi's.

Yep In 2002 our debt in relation to GDP was about 53%. Currently it is over 120% and showing no signs of stopping. The market seems to be turning a blind eye to our debt issues but there will come a time in the near future where it cannot be ignored.
