Approximately 34% of #corn production is within an area experiencing #drought. Much of eastern Nebraska has irrigation, which will buffer the drought impact to some degree.

Much of eastern Nebraska has irrigation, which will buffer the drought impact to some degree. Is the water source abundant and not sensitive to the drought? It is abundant. It is not completely insensitive to drought, but it will take more than one year to seriously affect it. I farm in the Upper Big Blue NRD. You can google their website, and there is a chart of the groundwater level for the last 60 years, measured each March. The most recent measurement is near the average. Groundwater in my area recharges from the Platte River as long as there is flowing water year round. There were a few years in the early '00's when the river bed went dry for several months each summer. You can see them on the chart as years when the groundwater level dropped rapidly. The drought broke in 2007, and 2008 and 09 had a lot of rain. At the moment, the Platte River has good water levels where it flows through the UBBNRD. Unless that changes quickly, I do not expect us to trigger allocation in 2024.

Eric is as good as they get. As he has pointed out many times this year the Bermuda high has been displaced far to the north and east and it has led to an absence of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. Until we get that back to it's normal location over the southeast it looks dry for much of the mid section.
