In my part of the world the temperatures have been way below normal. This on the heals of October being 1.8 F below normal.
How much below normal? I'm not sure as we are only half the way through November. But here is a metric. Last year Galveston Bay water temperature at Eagle Point was over 70F on this date. This year it is 54F. I would say normal would be 65-68.
Not "unprecedented" but it caught me off guard. For water temperatures to be 16F below what they were last year air temperatures have to be 20-25 degrees colder. Normally I catch crab through November and into December before I move my traps to deeper water. Yesterdays traps were empty...
Hardly any crab.
I have to adapt fast or its going to be a hard candy Christmas.

It's a nasty, dirty job. You have to have it in your blood to want to do it. Probably not much different than farming. This is not me but it pretty much sums up how Blue Crab are caught from Brownsville, Texas to New Jersey. I also harvest oysters and commercial fish as needed to survive.

Good luck timing those crabs down. Here Oct. and Nov. have seen multi-day extremes maxing out at 15-20 above avg. to 15-20 below avg. We need a new metric, as the avg. doesn't tell the story well.
