Spent a number of months (cumulative) in the UK. Driving was required. I left tiremarks on a lot of curbs my first trip. My second not so much, and by the fourth I was picking up on the "unofficial" traffic rules. Despite knowing how to drive stick I was never brave enough (or foolish enough) to combine "stick on the wrong side, driving on the wrong side, AND roundabouts." I found it particularly interesting to visit military museums in the UK, especially those covering WWII. The general attitude of US museums is that the US fought the Axis in WWII and won with some help from the various other Allies. The general attitude of UK museums is that the UK fought the *European* Axis in WWII and won with some help from the various other Allies (including the US). Not to say other topics and viewpoints aren't covered, but those are the dominant themes in the respective countries. I've driven in the UK quite a bit, and got over the shifting with the opposite hand pretty quickly. I can't ell you how many times, though, I entered a roundabout going to the right. Yikes!

Rules for wrong side driving. 1. be on big roads freeways are best. 2. avoid all roads without paint the more paint the better. 3. other cars are your friend. 4. sanction anyone to help in the car, back seat drivers have a free pass. 5. cell phones, radios and maps will engage your cerebellum driving zone it is a slow learner. dangerous!!

Having to shift the 4 speed with the left hand is the deal killer. The rest is generally manageable, but add the left handed gear shifts and it's a bit much for a Yankee down there.

Even in the older right-hand drive parts of Europe, it's an adventure. Never totally trust your automated in-car navigation device. Mine (Cindi's her name) cannot consistently differentiate roads from cart tracks in the old cities of Italy. In Florence she sent us down narrow, high-walled ox cart tracks where ... if I had upgraded to economy ... I would still be.
