Nowadays, I make my living on the water catching crabs, fish and harvesting oysters. I work hard but when you love what you do it seems like retirement.

[ snip ] Here's one for Ratty, some years ago doing a geochem survey spent a week in a place call Goondiwindi NSW and QLD border we drank $10 Australian red for hydration it was 32C. It was so different from anywhere I have ever been. Also spent a month in Odessa TX pulling kit together for a drilling rig, man there were "interesting folk". I want to die doing that stuff to the end. [ snip ] Ah, 'Gundy'. My first experience with Goondiwindi was as a night telephone attendant when I was teaching at a small town called Meandarra. Woken by the night bell, I was asked to place a trunk call to Goondiwindi. When I connected and asked "Is that Goon-diwindi?" the stern distant voice said "Gundy here!" Lesson learned .... PS: Meandarra was where I learned to play lawn bowls; the bowling club was the only place to get a beer on a Sunday.

Actually, I think that shot was taken shortly after the Great June Cyclone of 1967. On the Queen's Birthday long weekend, I came home from Meandarra and spent almost the entire time watching the rain. On the Monday afternoon, I headed back in my trusty 1956 Morris Oxford (see below). The Brisbane River was running a banker at Coronation Drive and I was forced to stop several times after dark on the dirt roads to wipe splashed mud off my headlights. You'd be surprised where that car went with those narrow tyres. It wasn't very waterproof though ....

I retired at 52 because I was made redundant but had a decent redundancy payment, I thought I might have to start working when it ran out but have managed OK, I've kept busy with my hobby of birdwatching for the last 23 years. Best thing I ever did, I'd recommend it. We have many birds here as well. Lots of cardinals, migratory hummingbirs and wood peckers (among others). I added squirrels to my list. They are very entertaining when they aren't stealing my peaches. Reminds me that I need to stock up on birdseed for the winter. I cut down some invasive small trees and piled them up into brush piles for winter shelter. I love birding in North America, I've been to Florida and Vancouver Island BC, fantastic places.

Wife and I are also close to retiring, if we can muddle by for another decade we should be able to retire. I have thought more about the future then at any time in the past as I've come to realize I have an expiration date.

I had a "Best before ...." label but I didn't realise it until it was too late.

I'd be interested to know the age spread here. Anyone else care to volunteer?

The Morris picture brought back a fond memory of buying plywood with my Dad and we carried it home in our Morris convertible. San Diego, California 1965.
