I've been thinking of coming down there with a kayak and trying for redfish or trout in some bay area. I have no experience with that kind of fishing but it looks fun and I need a change of scenery. I was thinking of somewhere up around Galveston or maybe Rockport / Aransas. Do you think I'd have any chance at catching a few fish? I know how the luck usually goes when you first try a new type of fishing lol. Absolutely. Fishing has been great since the Hurricane. Lots of Redfish and Trout. If you can wait til early October it won't be so darn hot and miserable. First few fronts really stir up the action. Can't go wrong with either Galveston or the Rockport/Port Aransas areas. Galveston has more to do as far as eating and entertainment but the shallow water back bay fishing is probably better in the Rockport area. In either case you can't go wrong. If you are into bird watching, Rockport/Aransas is a Mecca, especially during the spring and autumn migrations. Late September and early October are the best fall months, although some species are already on the move.

Now my eyes are always on the odd bird, trying to figure out what it is. (And I don't mean "birds" in the Australian sense).

Be sure to get a good field guide if you get serious. I think the National Geographic guide to NA birds is easiest to use. The Cornell University Ornithology Lab produces a great app called "Merlin." It has a wonderful feature that listens to bird sounds and IDs them from their calls. I've found it is pretty accurate, and when you get old like we are, sound is more reliable than sight.

DiMartino is becoming very popular on the economic talking head circuit.

Yes I might get those, thanks

Streets and highways are packed around here. My gut instinct is that we're going to bounce out of this next year, no severe recession this go round...

And even if I'm wrong, these are not "investment" price levels.

As a non-economist, I found this to be refreshingly straight forward and logical.
