Using gridded drought reconstructions that cover most of the western United States over the past 1200 years, we show that this drought pales in comparison to an earlier period of elevated aridity and epic drought in AD 900 to 1300, an interval broadly consistent with the Medieval Warm Period. If elevated aridity in the western United States is a natural response to climate warming, then any trend toward warmer temperatures in the future could lead to a serious long-term increase in aridity over western North America.

In Arizona, whiskey is for drinking and water is for fighting over. I used to live in Flagstaff, on the edge of the Mogollan rim (7000 feet). Our community water supply company provided water from wells several thousand feet deep. To the south lies Phoenix and a growing set of suburbs and small communities. Some of them are in trouble.

Took a drive up to the Cascades yesterday, went to look at a campsite, and along the way had to drive over an easy 15ft of water 6 inches deep from a creek flowing heavy over the road. Then drove up higher to play in the snow and because I had my cats, don't ask me, I almost lost one went he decided to go romping off toward the edge of a snow bank that had a long drop into the large creek flowing heavy below. Not wanted to lose the cat and have to explain to my wife why one of our cats died, I took off in hot, or was it cold pursuit, on the snowbank to grab it before it reached the cornice and fall the 20 feet down to the rocks and creek below, it probably won't have done me well either. I successfully grabbed the pussy and clawed my way back up the snowbank, but not without some scrapes and scuffs. It was a stupid idea.
There was lots of water in the Cascades, no drought.

Maybe it was after one of those cold escapades - without something to keep your head warm - that you voted for Biden?

There is this paper - some indication that these are periodic coincident perhaps with quasi 60+ year cycles.
Historical droughts in the Qing dynasty (1644–1911) of China

North Texas has been in the worst category of drought for most of the summer. A stalled front and the remnants of the tropical low that moved into South Texas last week resulted in a drought busting 15" of rain for the Dallas Metroplex yesterday. Down here it is often said that a drought ends in a flood. weather.com/news/news/2022-08-22-dallas-texas-flash-flooding-live-updates
