The simple demonstration with the compass and the extremely near and strong magnetic field is absent the complexity of our planet. One factor that comes to mind is eddy currents within the earth that will impede and dampen any fast change in field. Clearly the magnetic poles wander and probably always have. The poles have flipped repeatedly and perhaps remained at zero for sometime. Some argue it can happen fast occasionally but fast is a relative term. I have saved away the usual insurance items: guns, ammo, food, fuel ... just in case. Have an electromagnetic field meter for possible measurements. Working on a rectal version.
