I have a question about Hurricane Beryl being the earliest Atlantic Cat4/Cat5 hurricane on record. If this same storm occurred 100 years ago (1924), would it have been documented as a Cat4/Cat5? No. Because the data did not exist, and it was located in the middle of nowhere. Ships of opportunity would have sailed around it, or be sunk (there were years when dozens of ships were sunk by hurricanes 500 years ago... but no one really knows their intensity).

Winter 2024 Down Under ... unusual. Hunga-Tonga?

Large parts of Australia set for drenching as rain is forecast from Geraldton to Brisbane during wetter than average winter

Large swathes of the country are bracing for a drenching as a huge rainband envelopes the east coast and parts of Western Australia.

Heavy rain is forecast for large parts of Australia in the coming days, in what could be the start of a wetter than average winter and spring.

A huge, 5000km rainband will saturate parts of the east and west coast, with Geraldton in Western Australia set to be soaked and Queenslanders in Brisbane bound to open their brollies.

Vast swathes of the pastoral areas in western WA, as well as parts of South Australia and the Murray-Darling Basin – an area of more than one million square kilometres – will likely receive 25mm before the end of the week as the rainband moves towards the east coast.

About 50mm of rain will fall across Sunday and Monday in the outback regions of NSW and southern Queensland with this bout of wet weather expected to exceed the average rainfall for the whole of winter.

Snowfall on the cards for Queensland's Granite Belt for the first time in five years as sustained polar outbreak moves north across eastern Australia

This combination of weather systems will help to draw very cold, polar air northwards, dropping temperatures across Victoria, NSW and Queensland into eastern Australia from Sunday into mid next week, leading to very cold nights and days – especially along the great dividing ranges.

Icy cold south-westerly winds should bring temperatures down 4-8C below average during the week.

Queenslanders will feel the biggest deviation from their usually mild winter climate on Wednesday with many facing their coldest day in at least two years – Toowoomba could struggle to hit double digits.

we have highs of 16-19c this week .. but the short term forecast end of month first week in aug .. back to 14-16c ... ohhh and rain every second day ..but thats normal
