'Houses floating down the river'
West of Brisbane, in the Ipswich suburb of Woodend, then 15-year-old Jim Madden's family home was also flooded.

"I remember clearly walking through my house, water up to my chest, thinking, 'How could this possibly happen?'," he said.

The now-state member for Ipswich West said his family evacuated to his grandparents' house up a nearby hill, where he still lives.

"I recall getting around towards St Mary's Church [in Elizabeth Street, Woodend] and watching houses, whole Queenslanders, float down the [Bremer] river and smash up against the railway bridge," Mr Madden recalled.

I had that experience too, woken up middle of the night by a loud crack which was one of the houses hitting a large tree on the river bank. The house went by almost at eye level and I thought 'time to leave.' Luckily, we weren't inundated but the other side of the river wasn't so lucky.

BoM's predicted El Nino drought rages on.

Courtesy of cyclone Kirrily, it's been very wet in many parts of Queensland and this is the latest local story;  lots of flooding, road damage, rescues, etc and there is another potential cyclone off the coast a little to my North.

In Middle Northern latitudes ...Here in Middle Earth ...Winter rains are good ... slightly above average ... alternating cold, damp waves.  We have been spared the worst of the Eurasian Beast in January.  February forecast warmer here 14 days out ... and spring rains.  Unless a massive cold bubble blasts us end February.  If they have seed and fertilizer and normal weather, it could be a happy crop year.
