Atmospheric Heat Mechanics:
Note how Outgoing long wave radiation and tradewinds decline during El Ninos. Could El Ninos create higher cloud cover, which in turn, cut down the Outgoing ... thus raising tropospheric temperatures ... just like we see in the UAH atmospheric temperature time series?
That is a great description of the known mechanism. Now.... add Hunga Tonga H2O effect.

So, you've been right all along! I think that this is a very important paper. It ties ENSO energy states and movements to the SOI and solar inputs. Cycles are quite obvious. I also think that heated Indian Ocean inputs also fuel the Western Warm Pool during negative IOD events. And don't forget that big volcanic plug around Indonesia.

There will not be another El Nino until 2029-2030 followed by a monster La Nina into the mid-2030s

The 2024 ENSO numbers are just coming into the picture at the very left of the chart at the 2010 line. It seems like it is following in the footsteps of 3 previous ENSOs where the El Ninos peaked late in the previous year.
