American Chestnut

It looks like there is a chance that they might be able to bring back the American chestnuts.  May take a while to get to the trillion trees which were here before.  The apparently somewhat blight resistant 'Darling 58' cultivar may be a win-win.  There is political resistance due to it being GMO.   If successful, I think much more satisfying than a Chinese chestnut cross, which would not be the same tree.

Our UK chestnuts suffer from blight since 2000's apparently, however have some resistance to it so its not generally fatal...

We do have this miner bug that makes all the leaves brown early, late july/August.

Travelling on trains in London mid noughties, it was obvious on the raised sections as the brown chestnut trees stood out. By the time I moved 60 miles north in 2009, it was here too.

So far, not a fatal condition however, and to my eye, occurred much later thus year....more September then August.
