Geothermal has intrigued me.  So much so that I dabbled some fed energy credits in a small high-pressure vertically-drilled system that seemed appropriate for smaller urban lots.  Bottom line:  winter worked great ... summer heat dispersal "into" the bedrock was a problem.  Rock becomes saturated and system shuts down.  Horizontal ground system requires more space than your average urban lot.

I was thinking large scale but haven't looked hard at the subject.

you need a temperature of at least 250C to have any hope. Its thermodynamics and the generation plants become large and inefficient.

There are a number of projects around the world looking to drill into the plastic rock where it is close enough to the surface. Iceland,California and in NZ plus others such as Japan. Drilling beyond 5000M into 600C rock is very difficult.

on the plus side virtually infinite energy if achieved.
Ultimately Thorium and MSR are more likely to succeed I think a lot of this stuff is like fusion it can be done but to build a 1000 units is a big problem.

Independent journalist Ron Kendall Jr warns of “turbine graveyards” which have been popping up over the US state of Texas as turbine blades reach their useable life.
Texas is home to more than 15,000 wind turbines and has been dubbed a “clean energy powerhouse”.
In a documentary produced by Yucca Films, Mr Kendall Jr investigates the lifespan of the turbines and where they go once used.
“Once they reach their usable life we are seeing more of these, I like to call them turbine graveyards, popping up throughout the state, some to the scale of over 20 to 40 acres of maybe ten tall stacked up,” he told Sky News host James Morrow.
“It doesn’t seem like there was much thought into the end of life for a lot of these renewable energy sources.”

Mr Kendall Jr added many blades are being replaced within two years on some of the newer facilities.

Markbygden Ett, with 179 wind turbines, has in the last three years an accumulated loss of 2.5 billion kronor (220 million euros). Its debts now amount to SEK 6 billion (EUR 530 million). The reason for the financial problems is a long-term contract with the Norwegian industrial group Hydro for deliveries until 2040. In the current market situation, the contract means that Markbygden Ett is selling electricity at a loss. Hydro is not interested in negotiating the contract.
