Had a VW GTI, rabbit, and beetle. My son Matt has a 944. I suppose that's it. I find them to be more expensive than American to maintain and repair, and I scratch my head when I hear about "German engineering". Nothing in $1000 spark plug replacement jobs sound well engineered to me. That said, I'm liking this 911. Anyway, this is just a fun car, not a daily driver. It has a stiff clutch and is a little jumpy. It will do 0-60 mph in 4.7 seconds. " more expensive than American to maintain and repair, and I scratch my head when I hear about "German engineering". Nothing in $1000 spark plug replacement jobs sound well engineered to me. " That's exactly what I think from the experience of my time in the motor repair trade. That said, I did enjoy road testing some of the offerings from the Continent but ..... with reliability being my main criterion, I found Toyota and Subaru to be tops.** ** I don't need excitement. Purely by chance, I spotted this today: CR’s 10 Most Reliable Cars, Subaru Forester Shines Bright AgainToyota 4Runner (87) Toyota Camry Hybrid (87) Toyota Camry (86) Toyota RAV4 Prime (84) BMW X5 (82) Subaru Forester (82) Toyota RAV4 (80) Acura RDX (80) Toyota Corolla (77) Toyota Highlander Hybrid (75) I can't understand how a BMW got into that group. My current vehicle is a Forester. Those German cars are great when they work. Nightmare when the bad luck begins. You are liking your Forester? Lots of Subarus on the road around here.

He also has a Subaru that's even faster. He likes those Asian cars but he is a certified BMW mechanic.

A really nice car that 911 but climbing in when out shopping is rubbish but a lot of fun.
I have always driven European cars and the cost is significant they always reach to far with tech and need to settle for a year or two, however once settled they are very reliable if kept within the service demands.
When I got the daughter a car it was a Subaru XV I have watched my relatives kids with cars and the girls kind just consume them literally and the Japanese have mastered reliability when under siege.

You do know, don't you Mr. Rat, that in the States Foresters are primarily driven by Lesbians?

[ Snip ] Those German cars are great when they work. Nightmare when the bad luck begins. You are liking your Forester? Lots of Subarus on the road around here. It's an excellent vehicle in every respect. Fit and finish is top class and, for a mid-size, it is exceptionally roomy. I can't fault it ... it's our fifth Subaru and a long string of Toyotas.

My excuse is that my father spent 3 years in a Japanese POW camp.
Frankly Japanese cars are fantastic when I rent I try to get one, the dynamics of German cars are very different and I believe that is because of the frequency that people drive very fast in Germany.
Some months before C19 I went on a business trip through Europe with my Daughter. In the countries such as the UK or Netherlands or France people run on the motorways at 70mph or 80mph there are a few running up to 90mph and that's about the mix. Get to Germany and its different, the car we had there was a Toyota is it a CRV a hybrid smaller car I drive in the region of 150 to 170kph around 100mph and they are flying past constantly the middle lane is simply not an option many cars were traveling in the mid 200kph range (150mph) rows of them chasing each other.
This has scared the hybrid car industry and ultimately the outcome globally. A hybrid needs to have sufficient fuel sourced horsepower to be able to travel with it at the speed of maximum cruise speed.
My Q5 can run at 140kph with 50Kw but the petrol motor is 185Kw so it could have been a 800cc motor rather than 2000cc it would have used 20% less fuel and by increasing the electric motors the same apparent performance would be achieved.
Efficiency is a virtue and the small motor could have been a diesel with a thermal efficiency around 50% rather than the more usually achieved 30% when motors are at lower loads.
