If our wet spring turns hot and dry, my native grasses will be 8 feet tall. They love that.

Interesting video from an economic perspective about the upcoming food crisis. I would love to get comments from Sigurdur and the other resident farmers and food producers about it. It's 15 minutes for economic nerds but I don't think the numbers are incorrect.

I had never grown potatoes before, so this year I created a raised bed area bounded by ~2-ft vertical borders to hold the mulch that I would add as the plants grew. The advice was to keep the plants buried to just below the the growing tops. I planted already sprouting reds from our store-bought home supply. Wow. These guys really grow fast. I planted them 6-8" deep and have been "hilling them ever since. I'm up to about 1.5' feet of mulched material and they are outgrowing my efforts. I think that they have grown 3" in the last 3 days. I will add a final few inches of mulch before we leave and I will see what happens in the 3 weeks we are gone. Should be plenty of vertical material to the support the tubers that develop ... but we will see.

yes MB you begin to understand that the transformation of Europe was driven by this one introduced plant into Europe.
I read some time ago that the Romans left Britain because a cold period impacted the Chestnut production which was key stored produce of the period. I think we all know how little a chestnut tree produces when compared to the needs of a family or a potato patch.
Then imagine a country quite small at a relatively high latitude in the midst of a LIA and a blight with 6 million people. Ireland would have been hell on earth then.

And it is said that the English landlords helped them out a bit. Or so the American Irish say. I'm going to try to at least equal this guy. Got my Missouri tee-shirt for Volterra.

A spiffy little wheat export chart about 3 clicks down. Basic food independence cannot be achieved by relying on other peoples exports. The ancestors knew this in the old times. Results of the last three years send a message to the descendants.

Finished planting spuds yesterday. A lot of crop has gone in the ground this past week. There will be an yield, won't be a large one.

Whoa! A little late. Any idea's on how harvest is going to be? Big picture? It will be a late harvest in the Upper Midwest. As far as how harvest is going to be? Late ones are never good because daylight hrs shrink, temps are highly variable etc.
