Even if it is exaggerated, a lot of chickens have come home to roost all at once. The world is in wicked hands we are learning. My chickens are roosting in my freezers, I have a "Kroger chicken index" I have been following for a while. Specifically the Kroger $0.79 per pound, ten pound bag of chicken leg quarters index. It's been holding for a long time now while meat has soared. Probably Kroger's "loss leader" as I believe they used to say. But with a Food Saver vacuum sealer, my freezers are filled with the "red" side (beef) and the white side (chicken). When that dam breaks ... Properly seasoned chicken with a side of properly seasoned lentils and vegetable of the day (brocoli or brussels sprouts)

Always after a good chicken dinner, I wonder to myself what we would do without chickens. If they didn't exist, we would have bio-engineered turkeys or pheasants into something like chickens.
What about the other white meat? Grilled pork chops are cheap, and if done right can be almost as good as a steak.

Agreed. Pigs have gotten a bad rap over the years. We rarely eat pork anymore as Marta is convinced that it will kill us.

[ Snip ] My chickens are roosting in my freezers, I have a "Kroger chicken index" [ Snip ] So there’s this man with a parrot. And his parrot swears like a sailor, I mean he’s a pistol. He can swear for five minutes straight without repeating himself. The trouble is that the guy who owns the parrot is a quiet, conservative type, and this bird’s foul mouth is driving him crazy. One day, it gets to be too much, so the guy grabs the bird by the throat, shakes him really hard, and yells, “QUIT IT!” But this just makes the bird mad and he swears more than ever. Then the guy gets mad and says, “That’s it. I’ll get you.” and locks the bird in a kitchen cabinet. This really aggravates the bird and he claws and scratches, and when the guy finally lets him out, the bird cuts loose with a stream of invective that would make a veteran sailor blush. At that point, the guy is so mad that he throws the bird into the freezer. For the first few seconds, there is a terrible din. The bird kicks and claws and thrashes. Then it suddenly goes very quiet. At first the guy just waits, but then he starts to think that the bird may be hurt. After a couple of minutes of silence, he’s so worried that he opens up the freezer door. The bird calmly climbs onto the man’s outstretched arm and says, “Awfully sorry about the trouble I gave you. I’ll do my best to improve my vocabulary from now on.” The man is astounded. He can’t understand the transformation that has come over the parrot. Then the parrot says, “By the way, what did the chicken do?”

Snow forecast for the upper Northern Plains.
I was surprised how little field work was going on during my northern journey.

Forgive me for asking but you have a vacuum sealer, do you really like it, or do you just use it?

Forgive me for asking but you have a vacuum sealer, do you really like it, or do you just use it? I used to just put the leg quarters into thin, plastic bags (just tied) and they have lasted a long time (and we are still alive ). But Marta convinced me we should vacuum seal them. So she got one and likes it. I must admit that after looking at and tasting the sealed bag contents after a year, that the taste seems better preserved in the vacuum.

You are overpaying. WalMart has 10lb bags of chicken quarters for 4.38. I buy between 170-200 lbs a day. It's is the cheapest crab bait I can find... Price has not changed in years. But I will say the chicken quarters inside those bags have gotten smaller.

You should be pretty close. But who knows...
