BRITTANY A tough seagoing Celtic people that may have shown up around 3000 BC or so with the Indo-European copper-mining wave that flowed out of the Pontic Steppe through the southern slopes of the Alps (North Italy) a thousand years earlier. Archaeologists talk of a funeral stellae trail west along the Med and up the Atlantic. Took to sailing and never gave it up. The complexes of megolithic tombs along the coast of Brittany may or may not have preceded them. They came to control the tin trade out of Britain to the Med in the Bronze Age. Beaten into an alliance by Caesar in 56AD (at Vannes) ... but, being on the fringe, they were merely expected to pay their taxes and otherwise left alone. One of three remnant Celtic cores left in Western Europe. Reinforced by waves of Celtic Albions fleeing the Saxons 500-700 AD period. The modern Breton Clans (or their children) gather at Lorient for the Interceltique.
