Is transgender becoming as big an issue as abortion in the US? Only on the Internet... And in a few deep blue enclaves. Before abandoning WA, I knew multiple teenagers and one pre-teen who 'identified as non-binary'.

My generation and the ones before also had the gift that we were (at least mostly) out of our teens before social media came along to document our stupidity for all time. This made it easier to somewhat reinvent oneself in college, abandoning foolish ideas without having to defend abandoning them.
Today if you're foolish in your youth you have to stick with it or admit you were wrong... and we don't teach people to admit they were wrong anymore.
