Originally built here on Long Island. Two of my friends worked in their production. Fairchild-Republic’s factory was less than a mile from where I work and Grumman was here too. All gone now🙁. I’ve seen pairs of them flying low and slow over my head several times in Arizona. I love that plane! The Gatling gun is incredible. It's my favourite airplane! I believe if you compare their recent safety record to common military helicopter types you will find this is media hype.
Yes, their EARLY safety record was bad. The safety record of early fixed wing aircraft was far worse. Figuring things out isn't easy.

There is clearly an issue when transitioning between flight and hover that suddenly make it impossible to recover. I’m assuming that training isn’t the issue at this point. I wouldn’t get on one. |

"Perhaps" less lethal. There are a line of Osprey boats. When I worked for USGS in Flagstaff, we ran into a jet-propelled version in the lower Grand Canyon. They were running these things up and down some of the big rapids in the lower canyon. Testing perhaps. We of the rubber boat crowd were impressed, and immediately wanted one. Alas ... not in the budget.  I was not a "boatman". They took me along as moveable ballast.
