No mystery as to why Hitlers offensive in the Ardennes failed. The American economy focused on winning the war and we overwhelmed Germany.

www.telegraph.co.uk/us/comment/2024/01/29/del-toro-uk-army-spending-conscription-russia-iran-war-nato/"The US Navy has ‘freedom of navigation’ in their DNA. They currently have an aircraft carrier and five escorts in and around the Red Sea. The standard conversion for ships at sea is (just over) three to keep one on task. So if this mission endures, and I think it will, that’s a commitment of sixteen escorts for this alone – more escorts than the Royal Navy currently owns." And let's not forget that the US military is lowering recruiting standards because we can't meet quotas... how long before that spirals out of control?

The cost to keep them steaming in the Red Sea also includes the armaments to blow Allah's Messengers out of the air. Of course, you have to practice somewhere. But the beneficiaries of this freedom of navigation accrues largely to Europe and Egypt it would seem. And perhaps India and China? Egypt, as a good Sunni nation, who reaps the revenues of the canal could perhaps "clean out" the evil Shia-Houthi menace with its unemployed millions in search of a new settlement frontier. I don't see that we should pay the bill.

That assumes a Sunni military force can operate on its own, any distance from its own borders, with any notable effectiveness, without being so massively subsidized by someone else that the subsidizer would be better off doing it themselves.

Good point. The Saudi's have been ineffectually pecking at the Houthis for some time now. Also, Generalissimo Sisi might not want to give the serfs any impression (or capability) that they could use to burn down the palace ... with him in it. In the old days, Muhammad would round up the mounted tribal boys and go out on raids. After Muhammad's death (some say by poison administered by his youngest wife) the succeeding Caliphs took the boys on a hundred year ride that conquered much of the Med.
Age of the Caliphs Expansion under Muhammad, 622-632 Expansion during the Rashidun Caliphate, 632-661 Expansion during the Umayyad Caliphate, 661-750 Shows modern borders.
