i'm at an impasse for next yr do i burn wood or coal .. both are within £100 of each other ..the coal may last slightly longer ? both are going to cost £1000 ish ... but will still be cheaper than gas over 7 months by about £4-500 ?? this is the fuel value in the uk ... crazy i know .. In my town Sandwell you would be fined £300 for burning wood or coal.

They really screw you guys over there. This was a mild winter (mostly), but my total ANNUAL payments for ALL utilities (last 12 months) and city services amounted to about USD 2500. That's gas, electric, trash & sewer. Heating and cooling is a natural gas - heat pump combo ... like most Mid-West homes.

Out of curiousity ... what do you get for that Council tax? Y'all need to have a long "talk" to those boys and girls. Council tax... police fire nhs local running of town/city all the normal stuff Here in Central Missouri, property taxes and sales taxes largely fund the schools and the non-utility portions of city government. Sounds like your Council tax is a bit like our property tax. That amounted to about $2000 last year. This year we had an initiative placed on the local ballot, exempting "the retired" from property taxes on at least the first $300,000 (to be haggled over by the Council) of the assessed value of their primary home. Passed by an over-whelming margin. I am in search of the true story of this little gem ... and will follow it with great interest ... as the "community" property lot must be closely watched to ensure that they do not run off funding rainbows or little socialists with your money.

I’m guessing that there are no “slip and fall” lawyers there😳 Provided someone doesn’t drop one on themself or their partner, those lumbar spines probably won’t make it to 40.

Setting aside Weather.com's usual Catastrophist slant ... this might be interesting. Can fungi and mycelium save the planet? Can mass fungi decomposition be profitable for those who generate mass waste? Who generates mass organic waste here?
Here’s How It Works
Different companies use different methods, but the basic mechanism is the same. Mycelium secretes an enzyme that breaks down organic matter and converts it into food and nutrients. It can be trained to “eat” things like drywall, shingles and other common construction debris.
“We're out of room in our landfills. We're really space-confined and so the materials coming from the buildings take up a lot of space,” said Joanne Rodriguez, founder and CEO of another fungi recycling firm called Mycocycle.
Mycelium can also help remediate some chemical compounds and pollutants, including lead. Leftovers from the mycelium process can in turn be recycled into new building materials.
It doesn’t quite happen in a day, but Mauer says it can all happen within a week or so.
His firm recently built a house in Namibia from mycelium bricks, and NASA is studying potential applications for building on the moon and Mars.
A week or so? Them's powerful fungi!
