Meanwhile in Australia… it’s not just the sharks, crocodiles, snakes and spiders that try to kill you: Big old gum trees are called 'widow makers' for a reason. Don't camp under them and don't park under them. The branches can let go with no warning in perfectly still conditions. We have that happen around the Washington home occasionally.

Our young ones generally grow up quickly ... but not this year. A lack of snow, ice and road salt have kept them small.

Rare and giant' trapdoor spider species, Euoplos dignitas, discovered in Brigalow Belt
I taught in a part of the Brigalow Belt many, many years ago. Ah, nostalgia ..... This is a poor example of the vegetation and a good example of my poor photography: Typical Brigalow trees ... see if you can spot the kangaroo in the picture:

Incredibly lethal venom. Being used to our North American pit vipers, which are plenty dangerous, this is a whole new level in dangerous urgency.
Ratty I really love the look of some of the Australian landscape. The forests along the eastern mountains. Kind of a cross between Africa and India I think. Some of the prettiest pictures I ever took.

Home owner on Queensland's Gold Coast finds an eastern brown in the bed .... we shifted from the Gold Coast in 2020. Some interesting stuff about the brown
"If he's fully charged, the brown snake can easily outrun or outmaneuver anyone, so over 50 or 100 m, if he's fully charged, forget it, he can out swim you," he said. Australian naturalist David Fleay reported that these snakes could outpace a person running at full speed.
An untreated eastern brown snake bite can kill in under half an hour. "It's arguably the quickest killing venom in the world. No other snake in the world has killed people so quickly, so regularly," Dr Fry said.
"They would out swim Ian Thorpe, they are absolutely unbelievable."
