"German over-engineering" largely cost them the battle.
For all the talk of "German engineering", the fact remains that a Mercedes cost of ownership is about twice that of most American cars. BMW's and Porsche even worse. German engineering superiority is a persistent myth.
No arguments here .... and three times COO of Japanese? I would generally put the Japanese and the US at the same level. Both the US and Japan have been going to twin turbo, variable valve timing engines which are indeed fun until they malfunction. The Japanese cars are good. Where the common mythology went a bit off the rails is the notion that they are better than the American cars. In my experience, no not really.

We have a 3 yr old border collie who also knows all of his toys by name. We don't have 1000 toys like that guy, maybe 50. Only need to tell him what it's called one time.

Been in the German camp for quite a while and their durability is poor further their cost of ownership is ridiculous if run through the dealership channel.
I don't buy new anymore and have a purchase process where I buy distressed cars near new out of Japan or UK. (left drive countries) they land and run at about 40% of new less than a year or so old.
German cars drive simply the best sensational dynamics and actually very reliable between services they had a patch 20 years ago when the design team was ahead of the electronics reliability team the Japanese had this also but had much less of it. This is now much better.
The point is they are much better now and I am willing to own past 150,000km a Toyota is fine up to 250,000km and that is the difference but when you drive a Toyota it's not that interesting. Was in Germany three years ago hired a Toyota CR?? it was fine up to about 160km/hr but the German stuff was passing us another 50 to 100km/hr faster and looked very comfortable doing it. In NZ we have no Autobahn's so a bit silly really.
Always liked cars so there you have it stuck.

I think RAM pickups are the best product today. My 95 RAM 2500 made 1,430,000 miles. Neighbor kid is still driving it. My 2002 RAM 2500 barely broken in at 200,000 miles. My 2018 RAM 3500 has only 67,000 miles on it. So far it has been flawless. 50,000+ miles pulling a 41' 5th wheel camper.

A woman awakes during the night to find that her husband is not in bed. She puts on her robe and goes downstairs to look for him. She finds him sitting at the kitchen table with a hot cup of coffee in front of him. He appears to be in deep thought, just staring at the wall. She watches as he wipes a tear from his eye and takes a sip of his coffee. 'What's the matter, dear' she whispers as she steps into the room, 'Why are you down here at this time of night? The husband looks up from his coffee, 'It's the 20th Anniversary of the day we met'. She can't believe he has remembered and starts to tear up. The husband continues, 'Do you remember 20 years ago when we started dating, I was 18 and you were only 16,' he says solemnly. Once again, the wife is touched to tears. 'Yes, I do' she replies. The husband pauses the words were not coming easily. 'Do you remember when your father caught us in the back seat of my car' 'Yes, I remember' said the wife, lowering herself into the chair beside him. The husband continued. 'Do you remember when he shoved the sh*tgun in my face and said, 'Either you marry my daughter or I will send you to prison for 20 years' 'I remember that, too' she replied softly. He wiped another tear from his cheek and said 'I would have been released today.'

He wouldn't forget which direction to walk off a stage for example.
